Herd Mentality: A Party Game About Going Along With the Crowd

Herd Mentality

What is the best coffee drink? You don’t need to provide the right answer; you just need to predict what everyone else is going to say!

Herd Mentality is a party game for 4-20 players (yes, really) and published by Big Potato Games.

Gameplay

Each round, a question is read out loud. Example questions are ‘what is the best pizza topping’ and ‘name a cold country’. All players then write down an answer to the question. If anyone takes too long, you may moo at them until they finish. All answers are then revealed. The answers are then counted up to see which one was most commonly given. That answer is the winner. Each player who gave that answer takes a cow token.

If only one player gave an answer that no one else gave, then he takes the pink cow from whoever currently has it. A player cannot win the game while he has the pink cow. The first player with eight cow tokens wins the game.

Review

Herd Mentality is incredibly easy to pick up and explain, which is perfect for a party game. The questions are simple and family-friendly, making this a great fit for a wide range of ages. The player count is also quite flexible.

It’s fun to have a question-based game that’s not focused on getting the right answer or social deduction. If playing with a group you know well, it can be fun to try to predict what certain people will write down, but it can also act as a fun ice-breaker.

The presentation is excellent, from the box itself being fun to the pink cow that always brought a good chortle when it changed hands. The pink cow is a great component, especially when someone is getting close to winning and is struggling to ditch it.

Herd Mentality is light. It’s not the type of party game to send players into hysterics, but there can be fun moments where answers get revealed, and people find themselves surprised to end up with the pink cow. It’s not likely to become anybody’s favorite game of all time, but it’s an enjoyable and pleasant gaming experience.

Pros: Components and presentation, pink cow is a good mechanic, flexible age and player count

Cons: Somewhat dependent on the group you’re playing with
